Student's Experiences

From: Crazy Student Nicole

At first, I’d like to say I love JIC! Hello! May name is Nicole. I came from Japan. After I arrived here, 8 weeks already had passed. Time flies like an arrow, I met a lot of friends, teachers and local people. Thanks to them, I had a precious experience in Cebu.

When I arrived in JIC, I couldn’t speak English well. I was afraid to speak English in front of many people. But now I don’t hesitate to speak English. It’s the biggest and the most surprising improvement for me. And also, I was worried about human relation but the people whom I met in Cebu helped me to enjoy my life here. They gave much advice and cheered me up.

My first start in Cebu was anxiety. Until now, I’ve not traveled abroad very often and also I don’t like to travel. Furthermore, the fact that I have to live abroad for three months was enough to make me nervous. Also my communication skills with people are not great, Sure enough when I first met people in JIC, I felt difficult to even make eye contact, let alone conversation. So, I became more and more anxious and lose my confidence. However, this was simply a useless worry, and it didn't take long time to regain confidence. All the teachers were always kind, and they encouraged me not to lose confidence in my conversation by making the wrong sentences that were grammatically incorrect.

I became an optimistic person. I’d like to thank everyone for always making me happy.

NO JIC , NO ALCOHOL, NO NICOLE…

I hope to see everyone again someday!

They always encourage me to enjoy life. Originally I was not so positive person but I already change my mind.

Hello everyone! I am Don. I stayed here in JIC for two months. It’s quiet short time for me, but I am still satisfied. The first time I came here, I was very shy like I can’t speak to others because my English skills was very bad but as time goes by I was able to communicate through the help of the teachers. JIC teachers are kind and talkative that’s why I can speak with confidence.

During my first class, it was the Composition class with Teacher Zia. At that time, my English skills was very bad so teachers used easy words for me to know and understand the idioms clearly so, I didn’t feel any difficulties in studying the language. And, also the man to man teachers, you will feel that they are like your family or so close friend. They will help you find your weaknesses and try to fixing it. They also find the right teaching style that is good for you so that you will have the confidence to face people. And not just that, in my study period in here I also experienced travelling with teachers and during the trip I can also practice my speaking skills because the teacher/s will helped you correct your sentences. It think JIC is one of my memorable moments in my whole life.

Before I went to JIC, I was very afraid in speaking English. I really want to improve my English skills. The day I arrived here I felt very nervous because I don’t know how I can speak English to my friends. In here, I just use a little Taiwanese and a little English to speak with my friends.

When I went outside with JIC friends and teachers I feel like one of their family. So for those who dreamt to have a good English Skills don’t hesitate to do it. Just start doing it like me.

        FOLLOW YOUR DREAM IN JIC.

Now I live my life where I exchange jokes with teachers in addition to class, as if I lied about my lack of confidence in English. I can assure you that this is a real blessing.

Someone said a foreign language is self-confidence. I wouldn’t have believed this word even three months ago. But the confidence that I gained from my teachers.

If I had studied alone at my desk in Korea, I couldn’t have obtained it, and couldn’t have expected to have even spoken English well. Of course, I’m not saying I have mastered English during the past three months here. On the other hand, I think it is enough to gain the confidence that I can do better by going back to Korea and continuing to study English.

Now, it is hard to come back here because I get busy when I return to Korea, but I would like to have conversation with my teachers again even in the distant future.

As everyone knows, this is my fourth time to study in Cebu JIC. The reason why I came here time and time again is for entering university in the Philippines. Actually, I decided to enter university in the Philippines when I came here first time. This is the reason why I came here many times for studying.

The first time I arrived here, I didn’t know everything because it was my first time to go abroad alone. I was afraid of everything in my first week because I couldn’t speak English well. However, after few days, I had a roommate and I made new friends. After meeting them, I could enjoy everything. In addition, I also had my first trip to Nalusuan Island. It wasn’t a very exciting one but since it was my first time, I had a blast.

I had seven teachers. One of the most memorable teachers was teacher Anarose. I started to be a talkative person not only because of my friends but also because of teacher Anarose. We studied with her for only one week because her student went back from her travel, so I became her student for a week but I hit it off with her, we did many things and became sisters or very close friend

When I came here the second time, I enjoyed more than my first time because I had more friends so I could enjoy more even though I didn’t take a trip. Actually I and my friends planned to take a trip in my last weekend but unfortunately, it fell through before our departure. Although I didn’t go on a trip, I treasured good memory with my all friends and teachers.

My course was Junior ESL in my second time. So I had junior group class but I felt this is not suitable for me so I asked my roommate about group class and she recommended CNN class. Many man to man (1:1) teachers worried about having CNN class but I had this class because I have an interest about news. When I had CNN class first time, I was afraid of teacher Grace because she looks very serious but after few days, I felt very comfortable with her.

When I came here third time, I had a lot of fun because I took a travel to Oslob and Sumilon Island even though I took only one time. But I think it was enough because I stayed in JIC only for one month at that time. I cannot forget all of my memories in Oslob and Sumilon.

Finally my course at that time was not Junior ESL. So, I had four 1:1 classes and three group classes. I had teacher Michel’s conversation class, teacher Grace’s CNN class and teacher Zia’s composition class. Actually I had Michel’s class when I came here first time and I had Grace’s class when I came here second time. I had much fun both of the classes. I had Zia’s class first time at that time. I learned useful idioms and had lots of fun in composition class. That being said, I have used many idioms in daily conversation.

In this time, I was confused because JIC changed location. I studied only one week in the previous JIC academy. I started to adjust in our new environment. At the beginning, I went through a hard time adapting our new place. But I become optimistic for the changes in JIC. I can enjoy a lot like before.

Now, I have three group classes with teacher Zia, Grace and Marlon. I choose composition class because I am interested of learning idioms. I choose CNN class because it helps me enhance listening, speaking, reading and as well as grammar skills. Because I think I have confidence to speak English than before but I want to develop more in speaking skill, I choose public speaking class with Marlon. I have four 1:1 classes with teacher Elmie, Rosemarie, Alvin and Ely. I think every teacher has unique strategies in teaching.

As a student, you need to be open-minded for your faster improvement in English. As for me, I talked a lot with my foreign friends and teachers and I tried to study hard to improve my English skill. Lastly, I love JIC. Cebu is my second home.
